Shruti Mahajan’s work responds to complexities of identity, the ambiguous nature of belonging, thinking about memory and nostalgia. Taking various forms, it is a collage of presence and absence, of what is lost and gained, and has filmed the mappable along with indiscernible acts of faith, defiance, and hope. She works between mediums of paper, stationery, cloth, found objects and layered narratives.
In 2019 she was invited as an artist in residence at Kunsthistorisches Institut(KHI) Florenz, the Max Planck Institut (2019). The time spent at the Photothek, KHI, Florence strengthened her ongoing practice that looks at synthesizing the fragments of the architectural collage through drawing /photography/cutting/ stitching and weaving (quite literally) translating them into making works of art.
In 2012, Shruti lived in Düsseldorf as artist in residence at -Studio Höherweg 271, e.V. During her stay she presented her works at Museum Ostwall in Dortmund and at Galerie Alte Post Neuss. In the span of six months in Rhineland she did travelling shows along with Alke Reeh (artist based in Düsseldorf) in three cities- Neuss, Xanten, and Siegburg. These shows were supported by IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), Stuttgart and Kunststiftung NRW.
In 2010, she was invited for a six-month residency program by Kunststiftung NRW, an Art Foundation based in Düsseldorf. She lived and worked at Koelnischer Kunstverein, Cologne.
In 2021, Shruti collaborated with conservation architect Ravindra Gundu Rao for an Exhibition titled Spatial Dialogues at Shrine Empire where they presented a multimedia project called Continuities of Construction. This project was also exhibited at Accademia Albertina di Bella Arti during HUB INDIA- Part of Artissima 2021, Turin, Italy.
Shruti has exhibited her works at the India art fair with Shrine Empire in 2023, 2022 and 2020, participated in Delhi Contemporary Art Week, shown at Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai, British Council Delhi, Dhoomimal Art Gallery New Delhi,Gallery Open Eyed Dreams, Kochi, Gallery White Square, Berlin, Open studios at Koelnischer Kunstverein, Open studios at Höherweg 271, Städtische Galerie Altepost Neuss, Field Institut Hombroich, Neuss, Kunstverein Xanten, Kunstverein Pforzheim, Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai, Kunst Museum Bochum,Goethe Zentrum Hyderabad,Dhi Art Space Hyderabad, Galerie Maurer Frankfurt and at Galerie Westwerk in Hamburg.
