Mithra K was born and raised in Kozhikode, Kerala. She received her Master’s degree in Painting from M S University of Baroda in 2018, and her bachelor’s from RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Tripunithura in 2016. She did her internship in Jaipur in traditional miniature painting under Ajay Sharma (Traditional miniature artist) in 2017 during her Masters in Baroda.
Mithra’s works are a journalistic and autobiographical record that bring together scenes from her surroundings and weave them into stories where fictional and real-world characters come together to perform in dreamlike settings. Her practice primarily involves painting, adeptly extended by other forms like sculptural installations and drawings. She develops metaphors from an intimate milieu, which has a cathartic facet; hence the work is always an intermixture of personal and social history. There is always an attempt to readdress the notion of indigeneity and vernacular idiom.
She has been participating in various group exhibitions as well as community/site based art projects since 2015. She is part of the upcoming edition of Kochi Muziris biennale 2022. Her past exhibitions include Zones of convergence/divergence in Gallery Guild, Bombay, ‘Archival dialogues, Priyasri Gallery, Mumbai, curated by Pronoy Chakraborty in 2017. Her works were showcased in Art Asia 2018 in Seoul, South Korea and also was part of ASYAAF 2018 in South Korea. Mithra did Mandalay Hall residency in Kochi, curated by Bose Krishnamachari in 2018 and was part of KHOJ Peers share program in New Delhi in 2018.
