Chris Basumatary’s practice is inspired by the ideas of corporeality and nature. Through the surfaces of flesh, water, and stone his work presents a glimpse of his memories, desires, and fears. By repurposing the materials of cement, concrete, and paint, the artist recalls how the textures of water and flesh intrigued him as a child.
At a broader level, Basumatary speaks of the violence inflicted on the trans-community, noting that the intensity of emotions felt by any marginalized individual cannot be expressed linearly. These intimate and personal works unsettle the viewer like a subtle purging on the skin to remind us of those who silently suffer in the margins of society.
